Springvale Farm's tale begins in the late 1800s when the Groom family first settled this picturesque slice of KwaZulu-Natal. The main farmhouse, built in 1888, still stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this land. Just a stone's throw away, you'll find the charming Summer House, constructed in 1900 as a retreat for the original owner's spinster sisters who journeyed from England each year to bask in the African summer.

In 1974, a new chapter began when the Berning family acquired Springvale. What started as a horse stud soon evolved into a thriving beef operation, and later, a sustainable dairy farm. Under the watchful eyes of James and Sandra Berning, Springvale grew to house a herd of 850 milking cows, all managed with a commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Recognizing the beauty of their land and the growing demand for authentic farm stays, James and Sandra embarked on a journey to restore the farm's outbuildings. With loving care and attention to detail, they transformed these spaces into the five charming cottages you see today, each boasting a farm-style stoep, wood-burning stove, and private garden.

In early 2022, the Bernings decided to lease their dairy herd, allowing them to focus on their true passion - sharing the magic of Springvale with visitors from near and far.

As we continue to grow, we're excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. There's talk of reviving our vegetable production, which means our guests might soon enjoy boxes of hand-picked, farm-fresh veggies alongside the milk, eggs, butter, and bread we already provide.
